Happy 80s Pants: Would You Wear Them Again?

Happy 80’s pants rocked! Why? Fun kid fabrics were used so most of us had our own unique happy pants! In Australia, happy pants were a basic stretchy pair of shorts, made from the children’s cotton fabric of your choice. The shorts weren’t too tight, not too baggy, and ended just above the knee.

Dolly Magazine (aimed at young teens, before upgrading to Cosmo and Cleo magazines) released a pattern for the shorts. Since most of us were in high school, we had done home economics and made our own shorts.

These days, I probably wouldn’t be able to sew to save myself.

If you’re thinking of making your own pair of happy ’80s pants, you’ll need:

  • 1.50 m (1 ½ yd) of cotton fabric 150 cm (60″) wide
  • 1.50 m (1 ½ yd) of 1.5 cm (1/2″) wide elastic.

When shopping for your fabric, consider the following:

  • Use children’s cloth
  • Bold and bright designs.
  • Cotton material easy to use and comfortable to wear.
