Is a pet snake right for me?

So you are undecided about getting a pet snake. In this article, I am going to describe some of the positive traits of snake ownership and also some things you should be prepared for as well.

Advantages of a pet snake

Snakes make excellent pets for beginners; They require very little work compared to other pets like cats or dogs, or even hamsters and ferrets. Snakes only eat once a week, which is very easy to handle and pay for. Many people enjoy feeding their pet snake, they find it fascinating to watch the unique way a snake swallows its food. You certainly don’t get it with your traditional dog or cat.

Also, because they only eat once a week, cleaning up after a snake is a fairly simple task. Generally, you just want to clean up any waste the snake has from its weekly food, and then maybe once a month empty the cage, shavings and all, and give it a good clean. To agree with that, because snakes don’t expel a lot of waste, there is little to no odor associated with them as well.

Many snakes also love to be handled. They will wrap around their owner’s wrist or simply lie on their shoulders, depending on the size, of course. There are many times when I am writing articles and I have a snake wrapped around my wrist like a wristwatch.

Snakes don’t require a lot of space to enjoy them either. You can get away with just a 10-20 gallon aquarium when you have a baby snake. Depending on the type of snake you have, you will decide what size of habitat you should get as they age, having said that while they require a larger habitat with age, they will still take up no more than a bookshelf. .

And finally, if you live in an apartment that does not allow cats or dogs, many will allow small animals (hamsters, ferrets, birds) and you can probably get them to allow you to have a snake. Snakes are generally kept in their enclosure and there is no noise or odor associated with them that bothers their neighbors. Also, there really isn’t any property damage that a snake can cause, like a cat or dog can, which is why many owners allow it.

While there are so many positive traits in snake ownership, there are a couple of things you need to make sure you agree with before getting a pet snake.

You must agree to feed your rodents snakes. There are very few alternatives (vegetarian snake food), however many snakes have evolved to the point where they need all of their prey, bones, organs, and everything. These vegetarian pellets simply do not contain the nutrients a growing snake needs; they are also considerably more expensive than a mouse.

You should also be prepared to handle your snake regularly, to maintain a good relationship. Snakes must be taken out and handled regularly to bond with their owner. If you leave them in their cage too long, they will isolate themselves and fear you. They may start to lash out at you when you hit them. Make sure to socialize with your snake on a regular basis and he will love being handled.

After reading all the positives about snake ownership and acknowledging the few challenges that come with it, you should be excited to get your new pet. Snakes are a lot of fun and once you get one you will get addicted and want more. They are a great beginner pet, also great for children, to enjoy for years and years.
