3 precious tips for your baby to sleep through the night

All parents experience the period when they are sleep deprived because their baby cries frequently or won’t calm down and go to sleep. In the first few months of your baby’s life, she is likely to sleep about six hours, and by the end of the first year, she may sleep up to twelve hours. Forming a good sleep pattern early on is the best way to monitor your baby’s sleep habits and get yourself to sleep.

There are some things you can do to encourage your baby to sleep at night and learn to recognize when it’s time to go to sleep. Babies don’t know “bedtime”, it’s up to you to teach them by establishing a routine.

1. Establish a routine. When it’s time to put your baby to bed, feed him, bathe him, change his diaper and cuddle him for a while. Then put them in her bed and turn off the light. Her baby may cry for a while, but she must let him “cry.” You already know that they have everything they need, so they are ready to sleep. Crying is a baby’s natural response to attention, and they need to learn that bedtime means going to sleep. Every time you walk into the room you are imposing the fact that if they cry, you will come. Of course, the baby may wake up at night to feed, this is normal. It’s probably the hardest thing a parent has to do, ignoring a baby’s cries when put to bed, but you have to get over it. After about a week of letting the baby cry when you put her to bed, she will learn to fall asleep on her own.

2. Give your baby a comfort object, whether it is a blanket or a comfortable toy, he will learn to feel comfortable with this item. If she has the object close to you, she will perfume herself with the comforting smell of it, then the baby will learn to feel comforted by having the object close to him. If the baby wakes up in the night and smells the object, she will make sure you are near her and often just go back to sleep.

3. When your baby falls asleep in a place other than his bed, place him in his bed so he learns that this is a designated place to sleep and associates sleep with the right place to sleep.
