As they follow the journey of Christopher Columbus and other explorers to the new world, your students will gain an understanding of the differences between our culture and other cultures. They will also learn how the age of discovery and revolution in science changed the world and its peoples.
In this unit your students will explore the lives of Native Americans and their relationship with nature. They will discover their unique beliefs and traditions and create a Native American exhibit to share with others. This unit is designed to be used concurrently with the literature unit Iggie’s House.
Load up the wagons, hitch the horses, and let’s head west! This unit study will take your students on a journey of the westward expansion of the United States. Students will learn about the reasons for and events leading to the acquisition of the lands west of the Mississippi River including the War of 1812, the Oregon Trail, and the California Gold Rush.

This unit is intended to be used in conjunction with the American Heroes literature unit.
