Animal Preschool Activities

One of the quickest ways to get a preschooler to smile is to show him a playful puppy, some cute kittens; actually, any kind of baby animal will thrill them to death. Animals fascinate them without end! There are dozens of activities focused on the animal theme for preschoolers to do or carry out. Here’s a little sample to get you started.

Lamb paper art

Print out a template of a lamb, cut out the shape of the lamb, and glue it on construction paper. Put a few drops of glue on the shape and glue cotton balls together to form a soft and cuddly lamb. Ovals and black circles can be cut out and glued for the ears and eyes.

Ladybug Egg Carton Craft

Cut the cups from the egg carton into individual cups. Paint the cups with white acrylic paint (let the adults do this part) and let dry. The children can then help paint them red with tempera or poster paint. Don’t forget to draw a head, a stripe in the middle, and some dots.

Ladybug counting game

Make ladybugs with different numbers of dots on the back and distribute them. Have the children tell you how many spots the ladybugs have. Once the children know the numbers, ask them to add up the spots in more than one ladybug. Subtraction is also an option.

Turkey footprints

This is something that most children in the United States have done at least once. Have the children trace their hands with outstretched fingers. Use pencils, paints, glitter, etc. to draw and decorate turkeys.

Mexican bird rattle

Cover one end of an empty toilet paper roll with duct tape and insert a popsicle stick into the other end and tape it firmly. Put some small rocks, beans, or unpopped popcorn inside the toilet paper roll and cover the end with duct tape. Paper Mache the toilet paper roll and let the kids paint birds when they are dry. Orange construction paper can be used for the picks.

Easter Bunny Craft

Take some paper bags or small gift bags with handles and have the children draw the eyes, nose, and mouth on the outside for the bunny. Cut out the ears from the templates, let the children color them and glue them to the bag. The children now have something to collect their Easter eggs.

Lion paper plate craft

Paint the paper plates yellow or glue yellow construction paper or tissue paper over them. For the mane, you can spin yellow, brown and orange paint on a plate and have the children finger paint the mane on the lion plates. Cut out the eyes, nose, mouth and ears from the templates or cardstock and glue them together.

Trip to the zoo

What else can you do for an animal-themed activity? Have fun!
