The positive benefits of daycare for dogs
Dog daycare programs benefit the dogs of owners who have busy lives and are unable to socialize or exercise their dogs. Owners benefit from a guilt free day of work or play and can come home with a calm and relaxed pet. Dog daycare offers the best of both worlds for both dogs and owners.
Starting in California in 1987, the doggy daycare has expanded to virtually every small town in America. Started by dog enthusiasts, the owners apply the same principles of running any business combined with their love of dogs to create the ultimate daycare business.
An article in the online magazine VetCentric.com described the benefits of doggy daycare this way:
“The guiding principle behind doggy daycare is simple: provide a safe and healthy environment with lots of interaction, both with other dogs and with people. Dogs can engage in group play, gnaw on their favorite toy, hang out with humans at the office, or just lie on a couch and watch TV. The point is, they’re not home alone.”
Other benefits of the doggy daycare include a social environment where dogs can play together, lots of activity, a great release for high-energy dogs, daycare operation year-round (except major holidays), attention from members of the trained staff and peace of mind for the hard-working owner.
Dog kennels are mostly held in large, open spaces that have some system of separation for both size and temperament. Most dog kennels also have an outdoor exercise area. Some daycares provide furniture for the dogs to climb on, agility equipment, and lots of toys.
Some things to consider when looking for a dog daycare are the professionalism of the staff. Make sure they love dogs, know a lot about dog behavior, and interact with those at the dog daycare every day. Also, keep in mind the availability of space and “time out” areas for dogs that don’t get along. Make sure your dog is comfortable with air conditioning, heating, and bedding. Also, check affordability and general dog daycare policies.
