Tips for making a fruit salad

Although fruit is best when eaten on an empty stomach, a fruit salad is nevertheless a great alternative to other sugar-laden desserts that are often served after a big meal. Fruit salads are also great for between meals as a snack, or even as a meal. They are tasty and are capable of providing the body with a lot of energy, since they have a high content of natural sugars.

Making a fruit salad is very quick and easy to do. Almost anything goes when preparing a fruit salad, and therefore you can use whatever fruits and berries you have on hand, and the salad will taste great. However, here are some tips to help you get started making your own fruit salads.

Use fresh fruits

Although some fruits and berries freeze well, you should always aim for fresh fruits when making a salad. The taste of fresh fruits is much better, since they don’t have that freezer flavor. To prevent fruits from spoiling, never buy more than you will eat in the next few days. This will also save you money as you won’t be throwing away any fruit.

Let the salad rest

After cutting the fruits, combine them in a large bowl and let them sit for an hour or two. Doing so will allow all the flavors to meld together, making for a super flavorful salad. However, do not let the salad sit for too long, as the longer it sits, the more nutrients will be lost. Depending on how fresh the fruits are when you prepare them, you can store the fruit salad in the refrigerator for a day or two.

Just because it’s a fruit salad doesn’t mean you can’t use a dressing to bring out the flavors even more. You can use a mixture of fresh juices from other fruits such as mangoes, pineapples, apples, kiwi, pomegranates, and oranges. You can also juice ginger, mint, and other herbs that go well with fresh fruits.

Honey or agave nectar also go very well with fresh fruits. You can mix them with fresh juices, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger, mint, lavender, and a touch of sea salt for a rich fruit salad dressing. Once you figure out what toppings you like, just mix them up and drizzle them over the salad.

There are plenty of other ways to enjoy a fruit salad, too. You can experiment by adding nuts and seeds, yogurt, sour cream, or whatever else you enjoy.
