3 tips for hanging wind chimes

You love the gentle melody of a percussion wind chime and want to place it where it will catch the breeze, but won’t disturb the neighbors. Read on and find the perfect solution for you, whether you live in an apartment, condo, duplex, or single-family home.

If you live in an apartment, keep wind chimes indoors. You can hang them on the curtain rod next to a sliding door or window. When the door or window is open, the breeze will gently move the tubes of the wind chime allowing you to have a private concert. It is better not to disturb the neighbors. If you’re worried, bring a plate of cookies and ask them if they’re enjoying the chimes. If they say “what does it sound like?” then you can dance a merry dance in the privacy of your apartment.

If you have a larger place where your neighbors aren’t around you, find an outdoor spot close to where you spend most of your time. Ours is under eves by our sliding glass door. This allows the bells to catch the gentle breeze, but is mostly shielded from the big flavors, which cause an unpleasant sound.

Finally, remember that nylon and leather will last longer than string. If you leave your wind chimes outside all year, the material that holds them together and holds them to the hook where they hang will disintegrate. The sun will also damage the cable, so you won’t be completely safe wearing it during the winter. Once a year, take the hoods down and look at all the parts to make sure it’s still in good shape. Repair and replace any damage immediately, as you don’t want it to break and lose a major part, which happened to me.

It doesn’t matter if you want to place it for good Feng Shui or just enjoy the sound. A good set of well-tuned wind chimes will lift your spirits no matter what.
