Allergy to mold in food: the cause and the cure

At first, I never knew that a mold allergy can come from food. My mother and I share the same allergy. Damp places, very humid weather, old clothes or books always give us shortness of breath or other mild asthma symptoms. But when my mother was diagnosed with a food allergy, I realized that there are many types of foods that use mold in processing. Who can have this allergy? Do food and airborne mold allergies always go together? And how to cure it? Keep reading…

Mold, like fungus, is included in the fungi family. They differ from other plants or animals by their unique methods of reproduction. Its seeds are called spores. When an allergic patient inhales spores, they may have symptoms such as sneezing and shortness of breath. In addition to the air, mold can also grow on food. Although it is only in a small percentage, people with a respiratory mold allergy can also have the same food allergy. My mom can’t eat moldy processed foods like soy sauce, tempeh, or fermented cassava, while I don’t share the same allergy.

Although not a processed food, peanuts can also cause an allergy to mold alphatoxin, a toxin that can be found in corn, wheat, soybeans, and sorghum, as well as peanuts. Other foods that can cause allergies are mushrooms, melon, berries, beer, smoked meats and some cereals, as well as some cheeses, such as blue cheese. Other dairy products, such as milk, are believed to contain alphatoxin if it comes from cows fed moldy feed. The most common molds found in food are aspergillus and rhizopus.

So how can we avoid and cure allergy to mold from our diet?

Just like any other food allergy, the best way is to stay away from the foods you are allergic to. You should have an allergy test to confirm the exact food items causing your food allergy and include those foods in your restricted diet. Some people try the organic diet to stay healthier. However, since organic produce lacks chemical fungicides, it can mold faster than non-organic produce.

How to cure?

Allergy is a reaction of the body to a toxic situation. In most cases, the toxins that cause allergies come from unnatural substances. It also occurs in allergy to mold. Therefore, the effort to cure allergy with pharmaceutical drugs does not seem appropriate, since those drugs are also toxic.

The best way to cure this allergy, and any other allergy, would be a natural cure. Herbal therapy, homeopathy, and acupuncture/acupressure are some of the natural medication methods you can try. Of course, sudden discontinuation of pharmaceutical medication would not be wise either. You should consult your doctor before slowly replacing your treatment with natural substances.

Allergy is a unique disease that we often cannot make go away, however, through a consistent and healthy diet and lifestyle, you can live normally with allergies, or even asthma.
