Ferret Smell: Get Rid of Ferret Smell

Ferrets have a scent that is unique to them, just like any other pet you might have. Some people like the smell of a ferret, others can’t stand it, while most people fall right in the middle. Personally, the smell of a wet dog is the most disgusting thing in the world and second is the change of a cat litter box. While I can’t say I enjoy my little weasel’s natural scent, it’s something I’ve gotten used to. If your ferret hasn’t been spayed or neutered yet, you’ll notice a big difference after it’s done. Male ferrets in particular have a stronger odor than females when they are not neutered. Also, younger kits will lose their scent as they get a bit older.

If you choose to “lower” your ferret, this will not change your pet’s natural everyday scent. In this process, the scent acorns near the tail are removed to prevent the animal from excreting an unpleasant musky odor when startled (much like a skunk, though not quite as terrible!). This process does not stop the normal everyday oils that are naturally excreted from glands all over your pet’s skin. This is totally natural and something you will get used to, just like any other animal.

A couple of things you can do to reduce your ferret odor are to clean his bedding more often and bathe your pet less frequently. I know it sounds strange to bathe her less, but the reason for this is quite simple. Immediately after bathing your pet, the glands in his skin go into overdrive trying to replenish the foreign oils you washed away. Your pet may actually smell worse than it started for a few days after bathing. Most of your ferret’s odor is usually not on the animal itself, but rather on the fabric of its bedding, paper or litter, and your carpets and furniture. Another thing that can improve odor is slight changes to your pet’s diet. Choosing to feed your pet chicken and lamb instead of fish foods can make a world of difference to the smell of your ferret and litter box. Your weasel will also have a stronger scent during the spring and fall due to this being their natural molting season.

There are also products you can buy such as Ferret Sheen powder. You may also feel more comfortable using some type of air filter system, there are many available.
