Goa is mainly popular for its beaches, casinos and parties, but to experience the true heritage of this beautiful state, visiting its forts is a must. The Goa Forts are a symbol of the rich and traditional past of this land that was ruled by the Portuguese. They can also be called the Portuguese wonders.

Some famous forts in Goa are as follows:
Aguda: Located about 18 km from Panjim, Aguda was built in 1612 to protect Portuguese business interests and assets from Marathas and Dutch raiders. acute [which means water in Portuguese] It got its name from the natural spring located in this area. Built in 1864, here is the oldest lighthouse in Asia. Today travelers can see the magnificent ruins of this fort.

Chapora: Located just 10 km from the city of Mapusa, Chapora was built by the ruler of Bijapur Adil Shah. Adding to its beauty, a red laterite bastion was later built by the Portuguese in 1617. The village in which it stands is named after Adil Shah. This fort was ruled by the Portuguese for about 260 years and was finally abandoned by them in 1892. Before them, many Hindu rulers also attacked it but failed. Today only its ruins and the beautiful view of the beaches of Morgim, Mandarem and Anjuna can be seen.

Tiracol: Located in the Canacona district of South Goa, Tiracol was the residence of a local king. In 1746 the Portuguese captured it and it was used as a soldiers’ post to protect themselves from foreign attacks. This part of Goa remains unspoiled and a true paradise for nature lovers. During their visit to this place, tourists can enjoy different adventure sports like paragliding and rock climbing. Today it has been converted into a heritage hotel where visitors can enjoy a peaceful stay.

Cabo de Rama: It is located in the southern part of the Colva Bay, it was built in 1540 AD just in front of Aguda. In 1594 it was the official residence of the Governor of this state. A religious myth is also associated with Cabo.
