How to finish a root ball or tree stump for a table or lamp base

I am often asked, after finding a stump or root ball, what are the procedures for terminating it: Here they are:

Finish a root ball or tree stump

Once you’ve found the root ball or tree stump that you know would make a beautiful table or lamp, you’ll need to finish it. This is the process I use:

Leveling the part: Cut the bottom in a plane perpendicular (at right angles) to the length of the part.

Place the piece on a level surface and, using a level, draw a line around the piece at the desired height. Cut on this line.

I use a chainsaw for this, but a sharp hand saw will work too.

Sand the top and bottom surfaces to the desired smoothness.

Stumps and root balls take time to dry, often years. If the crust is tight, the piece is probably not dry. Remove the bark with an extraction knife or chisel.

Physically removes rot and insects. The smoke and heat will make the insects jump off the boat. A bonfire works very well. Place the piece near the fire and heat it. It will take time to heat up in the middle because wood is a good insulator. The wood doesn’t burn until it reaches 500 degrees F. If you get the stump over 200 degrees, it will kill the eggs, larvae, etc.

Use a good quality polyurethane to finish the part. Make sure to cover ALL surfaces – top, bottom, etc.

At least 3 coats are required to seal the part. The polyurethane will harden the surface and stabilize minor rot. The rotten areas really drink the polyurethane; Use generously on soft areas. Sand lightly with very fine sandpaper between coats. Let dry completely and complete.

Enjoy your work of art !!!
