Spyder Sonix Paintball Gun Review

The Spider Sonix paintball gun is a step up from Kingman’s more basic paintball gun and is billed as a good choice for the beginning player. This pistol has some minor improvements over the base Spider model that should make it a bit more appealing to some users. It’s your call, so let’s take a look.

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of the article, let’s discuss the pros and cons.

paintball gun design

Kingman’s Spider Sonix 2007 is the newest version of the venerable and very popular Sonix paintball gun. The newer model did not produce any significant design changes, it is still a very simple blowback style pistol, but it comes equipped with a few improvements over the base Spyder Victor paintball pistol.

Some of the features include:

  • A standard entry level ASA
  • double trigger
  • Sight rail and a vertical feed tube (you have to use a removable vertical feed neck).
  • Foregrip with gas passage
  • Forward expansion chamber under the barrel.
  • Delrin top cocking bolt.

It is available in various colors and general milling has produced a very cool looking paintball gun.

paintball gun performance

The overall performance of the Spider Sonix isn’t bad considering the price. It will fire almost as fast as you can pull the trigger, however it has a rather long and stiff trigger. This will significantly hinder your rate of fire, so don’t expect the high rate of fire that a high-end weapon can produce.

Another disadvantage of the weapon is that it is not particularly consistent. The paintball muzzle velocity will vary from shot to shot producing varied results. Despite the inconsistent speed, it is capable of producing a reasonable amount of accuracy as long as you use decent paintballs.

The Sonix’s forward grip and front expansion chamber don’t seem to add much in terms of performance. I think it’s a much more comfortable combination than the Victor, although it’s worth it in my opinion.

These upgrades aren’t significant, but they are worth the few extra dollars this gun sells for compared to the Victor in my opinion.

Reliability and maintenance of paintball guns

This is a very simply designed pistol which means it is very easy to maintain and as long as you don’t abuse it the Spider Sonix should perform well for years. I highly recommend that you clean and lubricate your gun after each use.

If you develop a leak in your gun then you should be able to get it back just by replacing your o-rings. One of the benefits of a simple design.

I should also mention that the quick release bolt makes it easy to clean the camera. It is so easy to do that you will have no excuse not to keep it clean.

conclusion

The bottom line is that the Spider Sonix paintball gun is a great beginner gun, but it can also be greatly improved. The design is very common, and aftermarket parts are available from a wide variety of vendors, so whether you want to get a barrel kit, electronic trigger frame, upgraded bolt action, or custom grips, the Sonix will be able to handle it.
