Tips for home decoration

With the arrival of a new year, many people are looking for a way to liven up their home. Spring cleaning is one of the many tasks that people do since January, and many times this includes rearranging furniture, changing curtains, and adding new furniture. In fact, you can also make your home look luxurious without breaking the bank to do so.

Luxury can be found in a variety of places, and with a little creativity, it can be brought to life in your home. Things like old wood can be used to make new furniture. Cabinets that have been out of use for a long time can find a new life as end tables with a little work, such as stripping and refinishing. Not only does it give your home a unique designer look, it gives you a place to put lamps, display knickknacks, and store items.

Shake up your furniture by adding some quirky pieces that have texture and color. Browse thrift stores for old furniture, especially from the 1960s and 1970s. They had the most fluid and unique shape, modern and spacious, all at the same time. Take a piece home, clean it, reupholster it, and place it in the living room. It will be noticed and you will have people asking you all about it. It will become a functional conversation piece.

If you have sewing skills, make some throw pillows in bright colors that will complement the room. You can very easily get fabric squares at your local craft store that are inexpensive and the perfect size. Don’t limit yourself to boring squares. Make some round or rectangular cushions. If you’re feeling adventurous, try other ways. Use a few or as many around the room in colors that work well together to give your furniture an extra lift.

Add interesting accents to the room in the corners, on the mantle, even on the floor. Things like candles, musical instruments from different countries, hand-carved pipes on a stand, and crafts made from beads and other unique materials can be scattered around a room in visible and unobtrusive places that will pique visitors’ curiosity and take notice. A chess set or cribbage board are also interesting accents that can also provide entertainment if someone wants to try their hand at gambling.

Home decorating is all about making your home as luxurious as possible on a small budget. Everyone has different tastes, so one house might be full of frilly things and another is all warm, dark leather. Personal preferences also have a lot to do with the way you decorate, but be spontaneous and a little adventurous. Put a scarf in the corner of a painting and see how it looks. Toss a baby pillow on a brown leather couch and see how it blends in. Mix and match things and play. You may be very surprised with the end result you get. On the other hand, you may have to start over. Either way, have fun with it. After all, this is your house.
